It Varsity Cup Final Day

Its fair to say that this years Varsity Cup has had its fair share of drama both on the field and off the field. But putting aside different pointed tries, matches behind closed doors and some drama that is not sports related. But one thing that remained consistent was that the Varsity Cup once again produced rugby of the highest quality, rugby that rocks.

The Varsity Cup final will be played later today and will see the original dominant side, Maties (winners in the opening three seasons) have a chance to rectify their two most recent final appearances when they lost to Tuks in 2012 and 2013. They will be facing Pukke who have been on the losing side of all three of the previous finals in 2009, 2014 and 2015. Many will remember the 2014 final where Pukke led 33-15 with 6 minutes left before UCT scored converted tries in the 75th (33-23), the 79th (33-31) and the 84th (33-39) minutes. Both teams will be desperate to write the wrongs of the past tonight at the Danie Craven Rugby Stadium in Stellenbosch.

One of the very cool initiatives that the Varsity Cup produced this season is honouring the 30 High Schools that make up the 46 players that will take the field tonight. Each school received the unique Pink Ball which contains the names of the 16 Springboks to have participated in the competition over the last 9 years. These include Lood de Jager, Trevor Nyakane, Handre Pollard and Eben Etzebeth. Of these schools Paarl Boys High School have produced 7 while Paul Roos and Volkskool each produced three.

Varsity Cup FinalThe Varsity Cup Final is of course also not a one-off rugby match, but rather an evening of entertainment that will also include the Varsity Cup promotion match between UCT and UWC as well as the the Koshuis final between Vishuis and Patria. Going away from the rugby there is the annual crowning of Miss Varsity Cup, which will take place at half time in the final as well as activation’s like Spur Mascot Balls, Trophy Drop, 50m Mascot Dash and so much more.
