The Premier Hockey League was launched this past weekend with the South African U21 Womens World Cup side taking part as the Namaqualand Daisies. Their inclusion in the tournament was to help prepare the team for the World Cup to take place in South America later this year. Fortunately for the team, they have Tarryn Glasby in the squad, the skillful winger is a goal machine and such is her prodigious ability she was awarded a player of the match despite being on the losing side in this weekends PHL match. I had a chat with Tarryn about all things hockey before the PHL got started.
Jabu: Hi Tarryn, we would love to know more about your hockey journey?
Tarryn: I started playing hockey in grade 1 for school and instantly loved the game. I played for my respective Western Province age group teams and was selected for SA at u16 and u18 level, and then in my matric year I played for Maties. When I was 18 (2013) , I made the Junior World Cup side, which was held in Germany.
Jabu: How do you feel about being selected for the U21 Hockey World Cup?
Tarryn: I am so excited for the opportunity to be part of this team and look forward to see how we are going to do. However, I know that we are going to have to train extremely hard over the next few months, as the international competition that we are going to come up against is on a whole other level.
Jabu: And what about the opportunity of playing in the Premier Hockey League?
Tarryn: The PHL is exactly what South African hockey needed and I am so excited and feel very fortunate to be part of the very first one.
Jabu: You score a lot of goals in your games, have you scored a goal in your hockey career that stands out?
Tarryn: I can’t say that there is any particular goal that stands out to me, as they are all special in their own way.
Jabu: As one of our top goalscorers, chances may be limited against some of the bigger hockey nations, do you feel extra pressure because of this?
Tarryn: No, I don’t particularly feel any extra pressure. I just plan on using my opportunities to the best of my abilities and hopefully having a high conversion rate.
Jabu: What has been the highlight of your hockey career so far?
Tarryn: My highlight has definitely been being included In the South Africans women’s side earlier this year in the Cape Town series, as playing for the senior side has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember.
Jabu: Having played in the IPT, who is the toughest opponent you came up against?
Tarryn: I would have to say Lisa Deetlefs in our game against Southerns.
Jabu: If you had a choice would you rather play at the Olympic games or win bronze at the Commonwealth Games?
Tarryn: That’s quite a difficult question to answer, as both would be very special occasions, but since as long as I can remember I’ve always dreamt about going to the olympics, so I would have to say the Olympics.
