This weekend the International All Stars will take on the Tops @ Spar BlitzStoks in Cape Town as part of the 2017 Pro Series Indoor Junior Nationals. The Greenfields Indoor Series will have three matches taking the total to 14 matches between the two teams.
The Tops @ Spar BlitzStoks, wearing a new kit manufactured by Tayla Sportswear, arrive at the series on the back of a successful African Hockey Indoor Cup of Nations where they qualified for the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup. Coach Pierre le Roux will not have his full squad available from Namibia and has used the opportunity to involve more of the greater squad who will be desperate to make an impact and stake their claim in the goals.
In goals the rotation policy is being consistently applied as Matthew Becker comes back into the squad, alongside Chris McCathie and Richard Curtis is rested. Subsequently we have also heard that Curtis has been called up to the SA Men’s Hockey side for the FIH World League at Wits starting on Sunday.
The aforementioned World League also means that Ryan Julius, who had an exceptional World Cup Qualifying tournament, Jethro Eustice, the two time SA Indoor Hockey Player of the Year and Reza Rosenberg are unavailable for the series. Another player who will miss the series is Captain Matt Fairweather who is coaching at the Under 18 IPT.
Recalled to the squad are Indoor World Cup 2015 members Jarryd Jones and Craig Haley, while youngster Kamal Ramburth-Hurt gets another opportunity to impress. Experienced defensive stalwart Matthew Coombes returns to the squad as well.
Mo Mea, who played the World Cup Qualifier while fasting, will bring his same energetic play and Robin Jones will have a pivotal role to play in terms of leadership in the absence of the likes of Eustice and Fairweather. Both Wade Paton and Rusten Abrahams scored 6 goals at the AFCON and will be hoping to continue in that same way. Indoor sensation Justin Domleo will once again feature and the team will be looking to Africa’s top goal scorer Keagan Robinson to lead the line once again!
The #RoadToBerlin has begun and this will be a pivotal part of the journey. It promises to be a series that few could afford to miss!
