At Sports24seven we love sport and we love squash – that’s why we’re bringing you tips to help improve your game and play a more aggressive squash match.
When a ball is returned high or you’re looking to put some pressure on your opponent and attack the ball – these are our top 5 attacking shots you can play to gain the advantage. You mostly will get the opportunity to do these shots when you work really hard during your rally to make the opponent hit a loop shot, which often results in them doing a back wall boast or a high sidewall boast.
1 – Straight or Cross Court Drives
You can either do this with a straight drive or a cross court drive. When you’re doing this, try and make it so that the ball dies on the second bounds in the back corners of the court. If you’re hitting a straight length, make sure to try and get it tight to the wall. And if you’re hitting a cross-court, make sure it hits the side wall to take away the volley from the opponent. Especially if you feel the opponent really close to you at the front, it’ll be hard for them to cover the back of the court. So this is a good shot in putting some pressure at the back of the court.
2 – Quick Drops
This shot is really helpful in taking some time away from the opponent, especially if they had just hit a weak shot from the back of the court. Here you’ll need to get on the ball really quickly and almost push the ball into the corner, getting on the ball as fast as possible. If your opponent is coming from the back of the court, it’s a pretty long distance to come.
3 – Short Hard Kill
This shot is ideal when it lands short and you then put a lot of pace on the ball. You’ll need to hit the ball in a very sharp and steep downward angle, forcing it to land really, really short and on the corner, but also with a lot of pace. This shot can throw your opponent off, especially if they’re hanging a bit too far back in the court. It’s a shot that is not quite deep enough to get past the service line and throws the opponent off by how quick and powerful the shot is. To do the shot successfully, it’s helpful to hit the ball really hard and also try to make it double bounce before it reaches the service line on the corner.
4 – Into the “nick”
This shot might take a bit more practice and it’s definitely a bit tougher to do, but once you find the right angle, it can really finish off a rally. When you’re looking to end the rally, this shot is great if you get it right into the nick.
5 – The fake shot
The fifth attacking shot is a bit more fun to do, and this is the fake shot. What you do in this one is swing under the ball (missing it) and then hit the ball once it lands. So it looks like you’re faking a shot. We wouldn’t recommend doing this in a crucial moment, but it’s fun to try from time to time to throw your opponent off. Just make sure you commit to the fake and practice it so you can actually pull it off.
Give these shots a try, practice them and then implement them into a game to see some great improvement. For all your Squash and sports gear shop online at sports24seven.co.za and get your items delivered to your door!
