In June 2011, the South Africans Women’s Hockey team were playing in the Champions Challenge in Dublin. While the performance of the team was credible with a controversial quarter final loss, the point that will be remembered for years to come, was that South Africa’s Pietie Coetzee became the World Record Holder for the most international goals. She did this in the process of netting 4 against the USA in a dramatic 5-5 draw!
As of today, her record stands at a staggering 225 goals in 227 matches. This is a strike rate that the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo would be jealous of. At 32, Pietie still has a few years left in her boots and will surely be eyeing that magic 250 goal mark.
Pietie Coetzee Highlights:
1998,2002 and 2010 – Played for South Africa in the World Cup
2000 and 2004 – Represented South Africa in the Olympics
2003 – Won the All African Games with South Africa
2010 – Scored her 200th international goal and played her 200th international match.
Pietie has been a role model for young hockey ladies in South Africa for well over a decade and it will take a monumental effort for someone to displace her from the top of the goal scoring charts!
