Presidents Cup 2011: Day 2 Four-balls

After day 1 has come and passed, the Americans will look at the scoreboard with large grins. Well except for Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. The Americans trailed in all but one of the 6 games at some point, but emerged with 4 points. Ogilvy and Schwartzel through away a 2 up lead with 4 to play and Day and Baddeley did the same with only two holes to play.

Els and Ishikawa were comfortably beaten by Watson and Simpson and will now face the same two in tomorrow’s game. Here are tomorrows pairings and the ATJ prediction:

Bubba Watson-Webb Simpson, U.S. vs. Ernie Els-Ryo Ishikawa, International

Webb Simpson played some glorious approach shots today and Watson’s putter was hot. Ishikawa looked overawed by the occasion and did not play particularly well, but then neither did Els.

ATJ: Americans to win

Jason Day-Aaron Baddeley, International vs. Tiger Woods-Dustin Johnson, U.S.

Day and Baddeley played some outstanding golf today, especially the chip out of the bunker by Baddeley at 14. They choked at the end, but I think an out of sorts Tiger and a cold putting Johnson will be there for the taking.

ATJ: Internationals to win

Phil Mickelson-Jim Furyk, U.S. vs. Adam Scott-K.T. Kim, International

Mickelson and Furyk played well today, but tomorrow they play in form and cheating putter user Adam Scott. I think Scott will comfortably carry his team mate on a course that he knows very well.

ATJ: Internationals to win

Geoff Ogilvy-K.J. Choi, International vs. Bill Haas-Nick Watney, U.S.

This could be the game of the day, Choi was outstanding today, but Haas and Watney fought back courageously to share their match. Couples seems a very big fan of keeping consistency in his pairings.

ATJ: Match shared

Steve Stricker-Matt Kuchar, U.S. vs. Y.E. Yang-Robert Allenby, International

Stricker was as bad as Woods today, but he probably shouldn’t be there from his injury. Kuchar could not sink a put today and will be looking to get that right. YE Yang had an average day as did Allenby and this could be a humdinger too

ATJ: Match Shared

Charl Schwartzel-Retief Goosen, International vs. Hunter Mahan-David Toms

This is probably my favourite of the American pairs, but against my two countrymen, I think they will fall short. Retief has quite often played his best in this matches when paired with a fellow South African.

ATJ: Internationals

So after a 4-2 lead on day 1, if the matches go the way of ATJ, then the Americans will see themselves pulled level with the Internationals at 6-6. That would set up a fantastic weekend!
