Jared Moore Crowned World Champ in Arizona

The 2013 IJSBA Jet Ski World Finals were held from the 7th to the 13th of October 2013 in Lake Havaus City, Arizona, USA. A South African team of 6 riders participated in various classes with exceptional results, including two World Championships.

Jared Moore, from Benoni, Gauteng, competed in two classes during the week long racing: the GP Runabout Open class and the Pro Runabout Open class. Jared claimed 2nd place in Moto 1 of the GP Runabout Open class. In Moto 2, Jared got a fantastic start and was in the lead when a collision on lap 2 between two other riders caused the race to be stopped while the rescue crew attended to the injured rider. Although Jared got away well at the restart, he was hit by another competitor and then had to fight his way back from 4th place to 2nd place at the finish. This gave him 2nd place overall behind James Bushel from the UK.

The Pro Runabout Open class is considered to be the elite class in International Jet Ski Racing. A total of 28 riders from 20 different countries competed to qualify for the class, with only 16 qualifying slots available. Jared claimed 2nd position in his qualifying heat and was ready to go to the start line.

In Moto 1 of the Pro Runabout Open class, Jared got a bad start and slotted in to 8th position on lap 1. He consistently passed riders throughout the Moto and managed to claim 4th position behind Kasza Gyorgy from Hungary in 1st, Masaharu Takenoshita from Japan in 2nd, and Jean Baptiste Botti from France in 3rd.

Jared got an amazing start in Moto 2 of the Pro Runabout Open Class which helped him to claim 2nd position from lap one. He stayed in 2nd position all the way to the finish line behind Dustin Farthing from the USA. Jared’s consistency throughout the two Motos helped him to achieve 1st place overall, making him the 2013 Pro Runabout Open World Champion.

The South African team consisted of the following riders, all of whom achieved excellent results:

Peter Britz, from Johannesburg, unfortunately encountered some mechanical difficulties with his Jet Ski and did not manage to qualify for his Expert Veterans Runabout Class;

Steven Van Der Poll, from Johannesburg, claimed 7th overall in the Expert Ski Limited Class and a fantastic 2nd overall in the Amateur Veterans Open class;

Dustin Motzouris, from Empangeni, KwaZulu Natal, claimed 5th overall in the Pro Ski Open Class;

A Nations’ Trophy is awarded every year based on the combined points of all the competing countries. 33 countries earned points throughout the Jet Ski World Finals and South Africa managed to claim 6th place with 265 points. USA claimed 1st with 300 points, Thailand 2nd, Norway 3rd, Kuwait 4th, and Canada 5th.
