With the modern social media era the new kits are generally known well in advance and fanfare can be very rare. But Arsenal and PUMA are starting to leverage off the popularity of the Gunners in producing interesting kits with even better productions in releasing the kits. The home kit was launched at a packed event outside the Emirates Stadium and led by club legend Thierry Henry. For the Away kit launch the team gathered thousands of Singapore fans together for something unlike anything I have seen before.
The reveal started with fans gathered at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre in front of Singapore’s stunning night skyline. As the audience sang iconic Arsenal songs, an intricate projection video transformed a five metre high 3D torso displaying the 2015/16 home shirt, into the new away shirt.
Once the projection was done the lights shone and ten first team players were on stage including superstar Mesut Ozil, heart-throb Olivier Giroud and new signing Petr Cech. There was a bit of fun and games afterwards, but the launch was all about the new kit. The new away shirt is gold and features a diamond graphic that repeats across the front and back panels. The neck is crew shaped with a v-shaped insert and the sleeves include a gold trim and underarm mesh for breathability.
It brings back a memories of the last time the Gunners wore gold as the away kit. That was the 2001/02 season. The thought of that season will delight many of the Gooners reading this. That was the season that Arsenal completed their second domestic double of their history. An FA Cup march to Cardiff where Ray Parlour scored a famous goal against Chelsea to seal the first half of the double, before marching to the league title by winning 19 of the last 21 games (including 2 draws). The highlight of course was when Wiltord scored the goal to clinch the league title at Old Trafford. Here is hoping the gold kit is an omen to something similar happening this year!
