Allister Coetzee was announced as the Springbok coach today, in a secret as guarded as Paris Hilton’s home videos, to a generally warm reception from the South African public. That sentiment of goodwill can quickly turn nasty though if results dont go the correct way for the Bokke in 2016. Coetzee’s reign will begin in around 9 weeks when the Green and Gold take on the Guinness-guzzlers Ireland.
While Ireland had a tough Six Nations, winning only two games in the tournament, they constantly pose a threat to our national side. Ireland have never won in South Africa from 7 previous attempts, but have won 4 out of the last 6 meetings between the sides. Its almost the perfect challenge to kick start Coetzee’s reign.
In becoming the Springbok coach, Allister Coetzee became the 13th Springbok coach since readmission into the International rugby circuit back in 1992. And although Coetzee will be judged on our style of play, transformation targets and other matters, he should be mindful that fans care about results and want the new coach to be amongst the most successful to have led the Springboks. With that in mind we look at the records of each of the previous Springbok coaches.
We all hope that its a great spell in South African rugby and wish Allister all the best!!!
