5 Short Runs to get your Year started

New Year has kicked in and many people have embarked on a new journey of fitness, health and clean living. Running has become my poison of choice for fitness over the last 18 months, so with my own taste in mind, here are five short runs you can take part in over the next month in boosting your fitness and challenging yourself!

The Gajiga Run – Saturday 21 January @ Big Red Barn

This is something new to me, it’s an obstacle course that consists of 7 obstacles some of which are 8m high and 22m long over a 5km long course. No water, no mud, no super human strength, no time restrictions, no colour powder, just pure fun. What’s exciting is that the Gajiga Run will travel across the country with events in Middelburg, Stellenbosch, PE, KZN and even the Free State.

The Music Run – 4 February @ Riversands Farm

We have previously written about the Music Run here. The Music Run can only be described as the loudest 5km race. Over 120 concert quality speakers pumping out over 150,000 watts of music will line the running course, known as ‘The Sound Track’, across five interactive and music themed zones – Rock, Pop, Old School, Hip Hop and Dance.

The KPMG SunMile – 23 February @ Fredman Drive, Sandton

The Mile is an extremely underrated distance, but one that comes with the significant history of Roger Bannister and the four minute mile. KPMG and Tsogo Sun have combined to bring the original super distance race to life. The KPMG SunMile is a team event consisting of a number of mile batches with runners of similar abilities racing each other, in teams of 5. It looks radical!

Parkrun – every Saturday across the country

Of course you don’t have to necessarily pay to enter a race, you can go to the weekly Parkruns that are free of charge. The weekly races of 5km are timed and run. From just one Parkrun when it launched at Delta Park to now having over 92 venues across the country and growing! Of course you don’t have to pay as it is free, but if you want your time and records tracked you need to bring your barcode with. It’s simple and unless you are running further, you have no excuse.

Serengeti Night Run – 13 January @ Serengeti Golf Estate

Shayne Gouldie is a fantastic part of the Fabric of the South African trail running circuit. Through his company, Trail Adventure, they organise a 5/10km run almost every week across the province at various golf courses and venues. A lot of the runs are night runs and you need a head lamp for it, but it’s fantastic and extremely well organised! I will definitely be at a few of the runs this year!
