At Sports24seven we love all sports, and we love trying new sports. If you are thinking of taking up squash, but are a beginner with no idea where to start, then don’t stress. We’re bringing you our top tips to help advance your game and make you look great on the squash court.
1 – Keep it straight.
While tennis may be more of a game of angles, squash is better played as a straight game. That means you should aim to play as many down-the-line shots as possible.
2 – Return the service straight
It can be tempting to return a serve at an angle, but this puts you at a disadvantage. Return as straight as possible and position yourself to the T to gain the advantage.
3 – Lob to buy time
If you are out of position you can create time for recovery by lobbing the ball. This allows you some time to get back to the T.
4 – The centre of the court is where you always want to be
It’s ideal to always try to be as close to the T before your opponent hits the ball. This gives you reaction time to any direction the ball may be going in.
5 – Volley away from your opponent
If you have the opportunity to volley, put the ball where your opponent is not. It gives them less time to react.
6 – Move your opponent back and forth
While moving your opponent side to side may seem tempting – it’s best to play the straight game. You can tire your opponent this way by hitting longer and shorter shots down the line.
7 – Hold the racket head up always
This helps you prepare for any shot early. Keep your wrist cocked most of the time and don’t change your grip for a forehand or backhand.
8 – Force your opponent into the back corners
It’s so much more difficult to play from the corners. You can jam your opponent in here by playing deep into the corners.
